What we’re about

Adivasi Mahila Mahasangh is an open platform of indigenous women dotted across the Jashpur District of Chhattisgarh.  We work for the empowerment of our community through democratic space making and creative livelihood enhancement.  We envision a world free from gender oppression and violence, where collective ownership and rights to control, sustainably utilize, and manage the mineral wealth and resources of our community will return to the hands of the indigenous peoples of our community.

Our process

This platform, strives to empower Oraon women of the state of Chhattisgarh.  Thus, our organization operates entirely under the leadership of Oraon women.   All major decisions in the Mahasangh are taken on a consentual basis by the members of the Mahasangh.

Although AMMS organizes many widely attended programs on a district and state level, many in our community do not know the name “Adivasi Mahila Maha Sangh”.  This is because we don’t feel that individuals should stand underneath our banner.  Rather we inspire people to take their own leadership positions and create their own banners according to their unique situations.  We have maintained a tradition of not giving any post or designation in the Mahasangh.

Our Activities

  • Supporting and taking legal steps for tribal peoples to safeguard our traditional rights for land, forest and water which is so essential for our existence.
  • Conducting educational trainings and workshops to promote the language, literature, culture, religion, tradition, legal system and to maintain drafted history of the indigenous peoples.
  • Providing support to local agencies in putting an end to displacement, exploitation and injustice in the name of development, of indigenous people.
  • Empowerment of the Gram Sabha (village level elected councils) to fully realize our constitutional rights.
  • Building the movement for land and tribal rights through organizing rallies, protests, dharnas, seminars, conferences, workshops.
